Fretted Bass for Jazz?
I have lately been trying to find a guitarist and drummer for a jazz trio. The only bass I have is an Ibanez Soundgear Premium 1200e, which I am planning to string with Pyramid flats (currently strung with Rotosound flats). Once I put the Pyramids on,would this setup work okay for free jazz/smooth jazz?

I would consider free jazz and smooth jazz to be about as different as night and day, but you can use a fretted bass for jazz, sure.

Almost everyone around here plays a fretted bass for jazz. It's fine. You may want to explore your technique a bit but even in a "standards" setting you can get away with it.
If I had a fretless (I want to get one again) I'd use it but I haven't lost a gig because I currently play a fretted bass. It's more about HOW you play than what you play - or it should be anyway.

I use a Fender P with Roto Rounds .110. I just turn the tone all the way down, and it sounds very much like a DB.
