I'd recommend index on seventh and middle on 8th
Your thumb should stay on the back of the fretboard at all times.
There's two different kinds of pain - the good and the bad. The bad way is if you feel you are stretching nerves/joints in your wrist and if it hurts a while after you stop playing.
The good way is if you feel its the muscles in your wrist/fingers that are strecthing. Be careful!
