Fretting question

I'm kinda doped up on painkillers cuz i had a root canal earlier today, so forgive any sloppy typing

But recently my teacher wanted me to take a step forward with my technique and practice pulling off not by pulling to the floor, but by flicking up away from the fretboard. I am getting real used to it and its increasinig my speed dramatically. But by practicing this I am finding myself to develoop a habit where I don't smother the string with my finger, but I only grab so much that it makes it easier to flick up. I kind of grab the bottom half of the string (if you are looking down at the strings while playing I am grabbing mostly the side you can't see). I am finding this combined with super light fretting to make it real easy to play. The tone sounds different too.

I am just wondering if anyone else does this. At first it was hard to do but I am beginning to see why my teacher wanted me to do this. I just wanted a second opinion on if this is good technique or not. Thanks!
