G D A D Tuning

I've been using this tuning these last few months and find it very convenient for certain jams and recordings. My Fender PJ Lyte Bass holds its own when lowering the 4th a full note, giving it plenty of definition and grunt. All it takes is reworking in my mind the "geometry" of the different chordal arrangement. Anybody out there doing this alternate tuning?

Which string is tuned to G. Is it the thickest or the thinest?

I think I want to tune my bass ABCD ... Then it will be easy to remember.

I went to Bass pro shop and to my surprise they didn't have a single bass guitar.

I use D'Addario 45-65-80-105 gauge

I tune the first one (thinnest) G, which is conventional, second D, third A and fourth instead of tuning the standard E, I lower it to a D, using the same 105 gauge string. It gives the bass the added lower end without going all the way to a 5 string bass.

I may add that a 5 string bass still has the upper hand because the 5th one is a low B, but for certain songs in the keys of D, G or others, having a lower D than the 2nd open string is desirable.

Yes, very desirable. That's why its one of the most common tunings.

FYI, generally accepted convention when spelling out your tuning is to do it from low to high, so the tuning you are describing would be D A D G.

I have a Hipshot D-tuner on my 4-string Precision so that I can drop the E to D if necessary. I don't use it very often (if I am going to need notes below the low E, my preference is to use my 5-string) but it's there for those relatively rare occasions when I need it.

My bad. Where I come from (South America), the first string is the G and the fourth is the low E so it was logical to use that order. Thanks for the feedback. I heard good things about those Hipshot D-tuners.

Well dude, "most common" implies a majority which I'm certain isn't the case for this particular tuning. And please, lower your tone or I will report your attitude as inappropriate. Got it?

"a most common" implies that along with few others it makes up the vast majority. You said. "maybe second" which would definitely qualify it as one of the most common, being one of the top two. Realizing that a recent head trauma could make people a little slow I thought it would be prudent to inquire as to your current health. If you feel that it's inappropriate for fellow tber's to be concerned with eachother's health, then I sincerely apologize. I will not inquire as to your health in the future. But to be very clear. Drop-D tuning is very common. So common, many would classify it as one of the most common tunings. Maybe the most common alternate to standard EADG.
Got it?

I use drop d tuning regularly. If you search under that name you'll find a variety of threads on here with other satisfied users as well.

The condescension in your tone is rampant and irritating and in my humble opinion won't help you in your endeavors. But anyway, all this scuffle aside, thanks for the feedback.
