gaining mucho forearm strength

I've been meaning to work out my prescision motor muscles in order to tap more proficiently, and I just reccommended working on forearm strength to a query on tapping. Does anyone have any methods/techniques for improving the muscles involved in bass playing, however odd or dubitable they may be? I was cleaning out an office today, and the guy let me have a set of 15 pound weights he'd always meant to use, but never actually did. Anything to do with those?

I don't think you need it. You want to gain viel stamina and endurance more than raw strength.

I've found that your extensor muscles, which lie on the top of your forearm and straighten your fingers, often need especial work. You can't control your finger movement without them, so make sure you give them a workout. Tapping trills will be great for this. You don't even need to do it on the bass. You can also do it on your leg all day long, although that won't enhance your precision so much.

If you really want it then take up the double bass (with bow).

Buy a BMX! I'd post a pic of my forearms but it'd be a little weird. I'm not sure how much it helps with playing bass but riding a BMX will give you big arms.

Don't we have a "no pics: no forearm" rule around here?

Just practicing tapping for a long time each day. Should build up the muscles you need. Just work on it like anything else- be patient.

This is from whacking off and using a 35" scale bass when you have short arms.

For having fun while "working out", these look interesting, hanging on to the dang thing should strengthen grip at least, probably for the same reason as BMX riding. Should be great for racquetball, tennis, bassist's fretting hand (not too sure about plucking hand).

ISTM that you build muscle strength by repeating the motion you want, against gradually increasing resistances. Lemur821 seems to have a grasp (pun intended) of the physiology, maybe he could comment further.

Try these two exercises. My teacher gave them to me and they have massively improved my stamina and strength.

E-1234--------------|----------------5432|
A-----4321----------|----------2345------|
D----------1234-----|-----5432-----------|
G---------------4321|2345----------------|
Do that with one finger per fret (will also increase much dexterity)
and keep advancing up the fret board
Another (OFPF again) is:

E-1------42------5|
A--2----3--3----4-|
D---3--2----4--3--|
G----41------52---|

Take one of the 15lb weights that you were given, tie a rope to it, take the other end of the rope and tie it to a broomstick or hockey stick or something similar. The hole the stick at arms length and roll the weight up to the stick. Repeat 5-8 times a day. Big wrists and forearms in no time.

I have an idea, buy a warwick bass. I'm sure those 20 pounders will work your arm and build up muscles =P
