Geting a ringing note while doing 32nd note runs, help.

Ok kinda confused, Ive been playing bass for about 10 years now and feel like i tend to know what im doing but i was practicing on my new six string Cirrus and noticed for the first time when i do a major scale (or any scale) that if i start on the A string i start getting a very quiet subtle ring from my open A string by the time i get to my G string with the run. Is it the pickups or my technique and if so what can i do to get it super clean? I couldn't ever hear it on my jazz bass but just the cirrus. Thanks

If I understand you correctly, you're saying that when your A-string isn't being played or muted, it rings or resonates in a way that makes an undesirable noise. If that's the case, the problem is related to your technique.

It also sound to me like you have technique problem and need to learn some left/right hand muting. You probably have an open string vibrating.

Try putting something on the strings to mute them and do your typical scales. If the problem goes away you know it's an open string ringing out.

I have no problem with muting technique until i get to the super fast stuff. and its just that subtle A string sound. Can any body point me in the right direction for the right technique when it comes to 32nd notes? Thanks
Like i said i didnt have this problem on my fender jazz.

Can you describe your right- and left-hand techniques in more detail? Do you play with a floating thumb on your plucking hand? How hard do you pluck? How do you articulate your fretting hand to control your strings?

At what tempo do you run into problems when playing 32nd notes? Practice playing more slowly and deliberately, and increase the tempo only when you can control the resonation of your strings; the the problems resume, slow down.

Well actually ive been working on this all night trying to figure the problem out and i isolated it to just playing one note on the g string and then i mute it and ive got my A string just barly in the back ground ringing. Its a new bass so i am wondering if there is something wrong. Its like the littlest vibration in my bass is causing it to ring out, Ive never had this problem. Could that have anything to do with my intonation? Im playing through headphones so mabey im hearing more than i useally would through an amp.

I feel i need to ask "What is the difference between the Jazz and the Cirrus"?
Why only a problem on the Cirrus?

If it is that the Cirrus is the only 6 string then look to the string width and how both hands cope with them on each bass.

I maybe just a familiarization of the new bass and as you play it more you will figure out how to dampen on the 6 string. This may take a while....months in fact, so don't sweat it just pay attention to the detail of playing.
Maybe its the bass, its not unheard of for new basses to have intonation problems for players due to neck/nut/bridge size, different pick-ups, etc. So have a look there and eliminate what it could be till you narrow it down to what it is.

The sound you're hearing could be a sympathetic vibration in your headphones; your bass could be OK. What happens when you play through a different pair of headphones, or a loudpspeaker?

I say you need to work your muting. When going from 4 string or 5 string to 6 strings, your old way of muting no longer applies. Have you seen the way John Patitucci applies his muting technique by resting his palm on the strings? ERB's are totally different animals and techniques need to be adjusted accordingly.

Well thank you everyone for your input, i was up till like 2 in morning trying to figure this thing out and thought i would look in to the floating thumb technique and that did the trick. Its going to take some getting used to but its not to big of a switch from just resting my thumb on the b string. Im actually glad i discovered this flaw in my playing and the floating thumb technique has given me more speed and tightness in my playing i can only imagine what it will do for me the more i develop it in to a habit. Thanks again everyone.
