Also, does it depend on the bass you use? I just gave in and bought a Sting Ray 5, and it's one of the most physical basses I've every played. It likes to be pounded on. It has an alder body and a maple neck/fingerboard, and it has a wonderful attacky sound. It responds well to a beating.

My Roscoe fretless, on the other hand, likes to be caressed.

I haven't really found too much difference in the way different basses "like to be" played. It's really all about how a bass is set up. If it has high action, I have to dig in a little more. If it has low action, I can get away with playing lighter.
