Getting serious about slapping and popping-can you help me out?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey everybody, this is my first time posting in this forum, so I hope you can be patient with me. I'm looking to get serious about learning to slap and pop on electric bass. A little background;

I'am now 40 years old, and have been playing since 1980. Coming up as a young person/player I didn't really get into it for 2 reasons-
The music I was surrounded with didn't have any of that
My middle and high school teachers totally frowned upon that-hey I was young, and was taught to do what your teachers tell you

Anyway, over the years, I was turned onto a lot of different things, but slapping wasn't really one of them. I dabbled a little here and there, but nothing really serious. A book called slap it, and parts of different videos, thats about all.

Well, I feel it is something I really want to serious ly learn, but I need help getting started. If you guys could provide me with some assistance-say, a good video, or other ideas, I would be really indebted to you.

Thanks in advance everyone!

Slap pop sounds cool but I fail horribly at it. LOL I can slap the E and pop the G and thats the total extent of my 'slap pop'...

Have you ever heard of www.musicdojo.com ? Anthony Wellington has a course on there that shows you the basics on how to get started. I've taken a few courses from there and I've learned quite a bit from it.

Hey Beef, if you still have the Slap It book, dig it out. It's a wonderful resource. If not, www.slapit.com. Tony Oppenheim rocks!

Also, go to Youtube and watch the Larry Graham video. Larry's left hand is not something you want to emulate, but his right hand thumb is the best in the business. And he breaks down slapping and explains it very well. That's one of the best beginner's slap videos out there because he slaps like a man. We need more slappers who slap like men. All this rinky-dink piddly-paddly stuff...forget that...make me dance!

I know of the gal you're talking about (Lydia?). I think she's great and she knows how to dig into a funk groove and sings excellently. I only use the term "slap like a man" to try to get bass players away from that plinky showing off how tricky and cool you are with a scooped mid tone, and into digging into a badass phat funk groove as hard and raw as you can. I mean no offense to you ladies of the opposite sex. You're all capable of slapping like men

^_^ I got a kick out of how you termed it actually. And yes I think thats the girl. She had a decent voice. I can not play and talk at the same time let alone try to SING.. LOL I thought I was some freak but I saw someone else here not too long ago mention they couldn't sing or talk while they played. I have no idea why but man, if you ask me something that needs more then a nod yes or no, I either have to ignore you or stop playing totally to answer you....

Kudos to all that can sing/talk and play at the same time!!

Hey Jimmy, wats up man? Yep, I still have the slap it book, so I will dig that back out.

I have watched some of Larry Grahams stuff on Youtube-can you believe how he can do all that stuff, and sing at the same time??? I will look for the Larry Graham slap video too. I saw something on Youtube-Graham Central Station is on Soul Train doing a song called Pow! Freakin awesome I'll tell you.

Jimmy, I've heard some of your slapping sound clips-even one using flats on the '79 P bass you owned for a bit-you do that awesome man!

Take care Jimmy, I've got a book to pull out.......

I don't remember if it was her-I think it was-when I had to learn RHCP's Aeroplane, I watched her do it. I could figure out the notes, but the technique just wasn't there for me. I emulated her way, and it worked out ok so far-I still need work on it.

What I'm really after, is not to be some kinda, say, Flea wanna be. I just want to be able to do it well, if I ever have to do it. Besides, learning new things is good for the brain-especially after you hit 40 like I just did LOL!!!!

^_^ 40 isn't too painful though I just hit 44 last week O_O Bah...don't feel it, or act it, don't really look it. You're only as old as you wanna feel I guess.

I am taking notes on the recommendations here for slap popping and will check it out. ^_^...tight pants and all.

Who? Us or you? Hopefully not us, because even though my butt looks great in tight pants, my belly doesn't. And anyone with the word Beef in their name should never wear tight pants.
