Gimme Some Old School Funk!

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys.

So, I learned how to play Brick House by the Commodores today, and it reaffirmed my love for the funk style of bass play.

What I need now is a list of good old school AND new school funk songs to learn, but prefer that they have instantly recognizable grooves, and rock the funk as undeniably as Bootsy himself.

Prefer simple ones to start too, so if you don't mind marking the difficulty of your recommendations from 1 to 5 *'s, where 5 is the most difficult.

Thanks.

Try Boogie Oogie Oogie by Taste of Honey. Drummers seem to love to play that song, and it's got a very manageable solo in the beginning. its probably about a 1.5, maybe 2 on your difficulty scale. You should give it a listen, it is ridiculously funky...

I always liked September (2) and Disco Inferno (3). Also check out Bee Gee's stuff.
I hope this thread gets huge, old school funk is the way to go.

Have a look at this thread!

Too bad they deleted the Funk 101 thread! There was a wealth of information in that one!

Try Mothership Connection by Parliament, so enjoyable nailing that. Probably a 1 for the notes, but much higher for the feel.

Thanks for finding that. I just couldn't find it and PM'd a mod about it. I thought they deleted it. I did do a search but it wouldn't come up for me.

I can't believe Bernard Edwards' bass line underneath "We Are Family" (2) by Sister Sledge wasn't named earlier.

Louis Johnson's line on the Brothers Johnson's "Strawberry Letter 23" (3-4) is another funky classic.
