Gloves to play in

Not sure where this thread should be?

I see some bassists playing with gloves on their fretting hand, and I'm just wondering if the brain trust that is the TalkBass community would know what kind/where to get them etc.?

Any information would be great, thanks.

Scott does it for a specific medical reason, its not some kind of gimmicky thing. (he has a FAQ on his website as to why he does it.)

I am not sure why Mbtumme (or however you spell his name, the guy that is playing with McLaughlin now) does it, but he does it too.

Those are the only two human beings I have ever seen wear gloves while playing bass.

I did it a few times for outdoor gigs in the winter. Just ordinary gloves with the fingers cut off. It was quite annoying, but fortunately the tunes were pretty simple so I wasn't in too much trouble.

I have never considered gloves as a means of avoiding sweaty strings but it does make sense. I'm afraid that even if I found gloves that I could comfortably play in the look would be too glam, even for me.

The Leather Architect. He's is an ebay member that does great, hand made work. He made me a set of Motley Crue gloves. He can make straps, jewelry, armbands, gloves, etc...Basically anything leather related. Check him out.

I sometimes play with a fingerless woolen glove on my right hand for muting near the bridge - sounds great

Your best bet if it's some medical issue is to find a medical supplies shop that supplies orthotics gear. Usually fingerless gloves will be included in what's termed as 'dynamic orthotics' or 'static orthotics' depending on need. Static ones will likely be of little use to anyone who plays bass, as they will stop any movement. Functional orthoses will allow the hand and wrist to move still.

If you do manage to find a medical supplies shop, you'll also have the advantage in finding something that suits you personally, as staff are usually trained in these sorts of areas and so can help you more.

As to myself, I also wear gloves for medical reasons during winter, as I have a condition which means the cold affects my fingers pretty badly, to the point of feeling as though my fingers are being ripped into with razor blades.
