Going to My First Lesson in Years Tonight?

Sign in to disble this ad
There are several things that I want to do and decided to jump start them by working with an instructor. I'm going tonight to my first lesson in years.

I am a very experienced hack but I'm new to fretless, and want to improve my (sight) reading, soloing and get some coaching on the tasteful use of slapping/poppin (combined with finger techniques).

Found him through getlessonnow.com after a Google search.

Any suggestions on things I might ask him (other than to play his Sonus and Lakland basses) about his approach, experience, or whatever?

"How many of your former students are virtuoso millionaires that are dating supermodels? I'm willing to compromise here and go for one out of three, but I want to know I'm getting my money's worth."

I would suggest checking your ego at the door and let him assess what he thinks you need to learn, whether it is improve your intonation, right hand, sight reading or the way you tap your foot. He is the expert after all. It doesn't make any sense to go in there thinking you know more or can play better than he can when you are paying by the hour.

Bah, who's paying whom here? The buyer is *always* right. Why do you want to go fill his head with concepts like "try to learn something for once in your life you useless slacker" when he's putting up good money.

Style-
I'm in the same boat. Been playing for 35 years and am now in my second month of formal lessons. I let my 'Sensi' know up front what I did/didn't want to accomplish. Don't want to learn to sightread music, but do want to understand theory and harmony a little better. Also not sure if he can break me of all my bad playing habits!
I look forward to my weekly session....best $15 I spend all week!
