It's always good to push yourself as a musician, but you're still "only human," in the words of agent smith from The Matrix. I know I've tried to cram parts for a performance, and they've always given me terrifying moments on stage. There's nothing wrong with being safe, especially to such a huge crowd (congrats btw) that you don't want to dissapoint by playing that lick sloppily at a speed you haven't quite mastered.

I'm going to take the totally opposite position from the rest of these optimistic well-wishers. I just don't think it's possible and you should quit and let someone else take the gig...like me.

Try increasing by 5 bmp a week, my drummer friend does that for double bass drums and in two months he went from 145 bpm to 210 bpm

Two people you should consult on speed and accuracy
Adam Nitti- He's the man and he has some great articles on "doubling" in his case, strict alternation of the index and middle fingers. I believe he has some threads in the TB ask a pro section

and....

Greg Irwin

yes, he looks silly with his mullet and his finger exercises look like parlor tricks, but after doing his exercises for a few weeks I limber up very quickly and am capable of playing significantly cleaner and faster than ever before.

Congrats on the gig, mang!

That's actually really cool to watch! I just tried it but my fat knuckles keep getting caught on each other.

Well done on the gig and the tour. This will sound strange but trust me, you are talking yourself out of this solo, and your brain being very accomodating will help you achieve this.
Big pressure situations is when we find out what we think of ourselves, and if think you do not deserve this gig because you cannot play this solo then that's what will happen on the night, you will not do it. Your doubts and fears will come to the fore and you will be exposed.

So relax and play the song nice and easy, learn it in your head and visualise your self playing it live and a great reaction. Visualise yourself playing this song perfect and your brain, on the night will help you rather than hider you. It will know it has done this solo before and there is nothing to worry about, because your visulisation will have created good memories of this solo and it going well, so it is not something new, it is something familiar to you.
Call it self-delusion if you will but it work for those who have the talent, skill in their playing to use it. The very thing you seek, speed, is killed off by tension, and what is creating tension is you by worring you will not be able to do it.
Vicious circle....welcome to the pro world, its not about being the best, its about handling the situations best.

Starting out at a slow speed and consistently speeding up is what I have always done to learn a difficult passage or a very speedy riff. In your case, I would play the solo at 95bpm until you are warmed up and comfortable. After that, speed it up to 100bpm. After you are comfortable with that, bump it up another 5bpm. I can guarentee that within an hour you will make remarkable progress.

You will notice that each day, you can start out going faster than the last. Keep repeating this every day, and you should reach your target speed in a week, at the very longest. You will have it nailed 100% by the time you tour, im sure.

Give this a try, hopefully it will work for you. It hasn't failed me yet.

so i had my bass lesson last night and the teacher said my technique was great. he said to just keep doing what i'm doing with the part and just learn it section by section and work on it that way. i got home last night and started practicing and realized something. i can do this bass run with 16ths faster than i can do 16ths playing a single note.... WEIRD! so... i think i'm just going to concentrate on my right hand speed right now. i put a rag under my strings to where i can just hear the attack and am just going to work on staying on one string and doing 16ths... with a metronome of course. i will do the run some but mainly concentrate on that.

I've never heard a bass solo in death metal. Alex Webster plays a 6 second bridge part in "Hammer Smashed Face" but I think that's about as much of a bass solo as you'll find.

After a wrist, arm, hand, breakage, injury, I had to re-learn all my picking again. I now use three fingers sometimes, and also use the index and second fingers on both the upstroke and the downstroke. Increases speed alot.

I went to a cannibal corpse show a few weeks ago and Webster does alot more then that, he 8 finger taps a riff out while th guitarists pick it normally, at an amazing speed, i forget what song it was, but there are many bass solos in death metal. Look up, Only Ash Remains -Necrophagist.

got up to 119 bpm last night. my goal now is to get to 130 bpm before the tour so i can play this part without flaw. its amazing how speeds you thought were so unbelievably fast before now seem slow. perception is a strange thing.
