Yep, the slap should serve the groove.

The only exception I can think of would be a cadenza of some sort. I've seen some Mark King clips with really great cadenzas--but essentially the groove was stopped, and he was just dazzling the audience with flashy stuff.

Clearly, King is in complete control of the time in this clip. Once the groove starts, his slapping is completely in the pocket.

I think about the bad and good thing is just process for some people.. I mean, it takes alot of maturity to understand music and knowing places.

All I can say is just to reflect on the music. It's the easiest thing to do.
