greasy fingers...

Not sure if this is in the right area,
but i was wondering about the myth tht Jaco used to grease up his hands with fried chicken or whtever before he played his fretless. Sounds like a myth, but i was wondering if any1 has tried this, mayb not with fried chicken, and if it actually helps in anyway. I wud giv it a go but i don't want to stuff up my flatwounds cause they are damn expensive to replace. Sorry if this has been brought up sumwhere, but my internet has been capped so it takes an absloute age to go through and do a search.

Cheers.

I've heard this story too, but can't sat whether he truly did or not. Maybe his tech will post.

Sometimes my finger tips will feel too dry. I run the tips right where the nostril flares from the nose. It's just the right amount - not too much. And, of course, I wipe my strings down after the set so they don't gum up

I second ryco's advice about nose grease. Works really well but it's a bit ..subtler. You don't get covered in drippy grease up to your joint, you just get a little bit of lubrication on the tips. perfect

Nose grease has worked wonders for me for the past few years, however, lately my hands have been a bit dried out and fingertips cracked a little. I decided to use New-Skin on three of my fingertips and my thumb. It smoothes out my skin, and it's slightly slippery too. I practiced with it this week and played my show this past weekend with it. It was great. If you're not familiar with it, New-Skin is a liquid bandage. The stuff stinks to high heavens and takes a few minutes to dry. Otherwise, I find it helps out greatly. I don't like how my plucking fingers feel in hot outdoor shows, or when they get dry and cracked in the winter, so I'm thinking I'll be using this quite a bit.

Best wishes.

There is also some stuff.. I think it's called FastFret. It makes your strings feel kinda greasy. I personally don't really care for it, but I know guitarists who use it.

I've been curious of Fast Fret myself. I've never tried it though. I do however use Dunlop string cleaner and conditioner. I'm not one for changing my strings often. I use Elixir Nanowebs - coated strings. The coating eventually wears off on these strings. I had bought a new set but had this bottle of stuff laying around so I thought I'd try it. It made a huge difference. I figure it will be a while again before I change strings. I miss the slipperyness of the coating for my picking fingers, but the New-Skin seems to make up for that.

All in all, I don't have to have any of it. I just find those things to be helpful in addition to my nose grease. :-)
