"Grits ain't groceries" bassline...

I have done a search or two on this, but info is sort of sparse and I haven't found a consensus anywhere on the 'right' way to do things, so I thought I'd renew the discussion...

There are two places in the main part of "Grits ain't Groceries" that require you to switch from one string to another on the same fret - and rather quickly. The first time is going from the A to the E string(down a 5th), and the second is going from the D to the G string (up a 4th). Is there a 'preferred' method to getting this done cleanly and efficiently (i.e. a technique that will not prove detrimental down the road) or is a transition like this up to the individual player?

All I know right now is that I have found a huge hole in my technique that needs filling.
