| Guitar vs. Bass fingerstyle

I ran across a thread about this recently and now I can't find it. Anyway, I've played guitar all my life, a lot of it fingerstyle, which requires (for me) nails. I've been playing bass off and on for ten years or so but only started playing full time just recently. Trying to learn fingerstyle on bass has been a problem for me in that I've not wanted to cut my nails because that would hurt my abilities playing guitar. In the other thread I saw, there were others who've been experiencing the same problem.
I found a solution.
I ordered some picks called ProPiks from a company called Guptil Music online. They are nickle steel and are finger picks, but unlike any finger pick I've ever seen. I cannot use regular finger picks, they're just too clumsy. These are different. They let the flesh part of your finger contact the strings. You'll just have to look them up and see the picture to see what I'm talking about. Still, when I first got them, they worked great but they had this steel on steel sound that I didn't like. I wound up putting a couple of coats of clear nail polish on the part of the picks that contact the strings and now they sound just like nails. Now I can cut my nails and learn proper fingerstyle on bass without giving up fingerstyle guitar. Anyway, just putting it out there for anyone who might be interested. |
