I have an audition on Monday, but I was more focussed on needing to know if I'd need any specific technique. This style of music isn't my first choice to play in, but I'll take what I can get. Is it easier to play 'with a pick' (in quotes because I don't use a pick ever; if I'm picking, it's just my fingers pretending to hold one and doing it themselves) or with fingers? Are there any specific songs I could check out that are a typical hardcore/punk/screamo/whatever song, which would give me a headsup as to what my playing is going to be like? My assumption with the vast majority of punk music is that the bassists aren't spectacular (there are a few, I know), and mostly just pumping root notes.
So really anything worth knowing about playing bass in a fast-paced non-metal band would be appreciated.
Cheers

| | | | i think this genre demands you to attack the root note with a pick ...like your life depends on it....and to do the cheesy one semitone below and up warble...sort of rockerbilly style.
this may well get u thro..good luck. |

So they're enevitably going to see the real you, why shock them and risk later getting removed, give them the real deal from the get go.

That's what I was doing back in '77

| | | | depend on the style. Actually i believed their is no limit in music. I'm actually in a punk/alternative rock band, but one song the bassline compose was a slap and pop funk stuff, and another was a hip-hop/groovy/korn-ish bassline.
so don't put a limit, just play the style you like but at the same time learn the style of your band and so you can be a more versatile player as a whole. |

there is quite a bit of difference there...
but i guess the bass playing style would be around the same
but the fact of the matter is they are still musicians
and still appreciate a GOOD bass player
show them you can play fast with a pick, but also you can play a good groove
my 4 cents

im educated in that realm, seeing as im in 3 hardcore bands
nooo..... you dont need a pick i never use picks,
one way actually it really livens up the music, is play complex, fast bass lines, like
like metal bass lines, but under harcore guitars, it really sounds amazing,
cause once you get into that groove, guitars and basses doin real fast,
man, its so tight and together.
