Harmonic Slides?

Sign in to disble this ad
I was watching this bass solo by Matt (one of Joe Satriani's bassists), and I noticed a 1:48 he starts sliding harmonics. How do you do this?

For a natural harmonic like he's done, sound the harmonic and quickly push down on the string (fretting hand, i.e. finger the note that coincides with the position of the harmonic) and slide as you please.
You can do similar with artificial harmonics by sliding the same hand across.
It's relatively hard to accomplish on a fretted bass, though.

you first get the harmonic like you normally would, light touch on the string, then you push down and slide like you normally would!

hope this helps!

It is remarkably easy to do on a fretless bass. As said above, sound the natural harmonic as clearly as you can, and then push down on the same location and slide it up or down. Artificial harmonics are done in the same fashion, as long as you know how to do them.

With a fretted bass, it is more difficult to do, but with practice, as with anything, it can be accomplished. Artificial harmonics are even more difficult, but it's still possible.

Holy crap, I had no idea you could slide harmonics.

Come to think of it, thats one aspect I never really explored. I know how to sound them but I have no idea how their progression works.

rarisgood, I love your sig.
