Harmonic Solo Pieces

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey TB right now I'm learning one of those harmonically based solo pieces like Portrait of Tracy. I like this one alot because the creator uses harmonics and fretted notes almost like 2 different instruments. Check it out

the part I'm learning starts around 1:40. I was wondering if you guys had any tips on how to make the harmonics sound better and louder (i.e. equalizer/bass settings), or tips in general for playing something like this. I've got the free part down, it's the funky part that I'm working at right now.

For harmonics, you have to be touching the string on EXACTLY the right spot, much like fretting on a fretless, otherwise the sound doesn't sound as full as it should. Also, picking closer to the bridge makes the harmonics louder and clearer.

Make sure your tone pot is turned to "fully open" in order to get the most highs. If you want, boost your mids and highs a bit on the (pre)amp, that should give some high clarity.

So do new strings, different strings (lighter, heavier, different core, etc. - experiment), pickup location, wood, and so on. Some compression will help the harmonics sing too as might a heavier bridge and maybe string-through body (not that I really know).

In general, whatever would make your bass brighter and give you more sustain would help emphasize harmonics.
