(About Geddy's one-finger "flamenco" style)

I'm curious about this, mainly because I'm woodshedding on this technique. I'm gradually improving (), but combining it with palm muting is extremely difficult. Actually, I can't figure out how to make that combination work. Nothing wrong with that since I'm aware of the many limitations I have, but the point is: I've seen many live Rush videos and I can't recall seeing Geddy doing flamenco + palm muting. Have you? I know that magazines aren't 100% reliable and I barely use them, but I've just found that remark and I'm curious about its veracity. Thank you in advance!

P.S.: In case you are curious, the bridge of "Animate" starts at 3:19 on the original recording (the magazine says "3:27").

I've seen him to the flamenco thing, but the palm muting is a bit perplexing to me.

Then again, Geddy's right hand technique has always seemed mysterious to me - I've never really seen him anchor his hand and pluck the traditional way, and his palm always seems closed and his index finger seems to do most of the work. Yet his tone and lines just flow.

Amazing, amazing player.

Geddy explains it at 3:57 about his muting. His fingers strike the strings at a 45 degree angle with his palm resting on the strings.

Awesome video - I love how he refers to non-melodic / just holding down the bottom bass lines as "pedestrian".

He doesn't do the palm mute a lot, actually hardly on more recent records. Live he'll do it as he free wheels some stuff.

Once you get the single finger flamenco down, it's actually pretty fun to put in here and there during other songs.

The one I'm still having a few issues with is the double finger "raking" he uses to give more "noise" on some parts.

Actually I find the Geddy flamenco one finger and palm muting very easy to do. That may be because I have been pick playing and palm muting in a similar manner for many years. I think of my finger as a pick.

The thing I don't like about that technique is I started using it too much for a while and it started to become dominant to my two finger technique.
