Unhappy Having to play w/just 2 fingers on fretting hand...

Long story short I have a callous type thingy on my left hand index finger that's been there for a while and recently became inflamed. It sucks.

My doctor is getting it all fixed up, but it's taking a while, and cus I don't wan't to lose anything as far as bass playing goes, I've been playing useing only my middle and ring fingers. The scary part is how easy it is to play some lines w/ just 2 fingers. Got "Money" nailed down after just a few minutes.

Just figured I'd post for the hell of it... It has been interesting though!

I feel you; spent about a year playing without using the middle finger on my fretting hand after a bandsaw accident a few years ago. I'm back to playing again, but have had to alter my left-hand technique markedly.

Luckily it sounds like you are going to recover fully, but if you want an inspirational story, consider Django Reinhardt.

If the music needs to come out, it will. Good luck with your recovery.

Why can't you use your other finger (fourth finger) also? Better to practice as close to full capacity as you can than developing new bad habits like not using your fourth finger.

There's a bassist in Galveston, TX, named Neil who is missing his middle and ring finger on his left hand, and still he plays- and he's a lead singer too! He uses his first finger and pinky, plays a Steinberger, and is generally the most hyper on-stage bassplayer I know. So, it can be done!

And the one armed bassist, who's name I don't know. There's a video of him on google videos linked to from this forum though.

I saw the video of the bassist a while back, and He's ******' amazing!!!!! Finger's getting better. I'm able to use it a little bit at least! And yes, I am being carful

Like I said in my OP, it's been interesting. It's also been a great opertunity to use my pinky. Thanks to WillBuckingham for pointing that out! Kinda feels wierd, but I'm sure I'll get used to it
