God, I love this thread.

It reminds me of "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," when Jim Carrey's character asks the doctor if it will hurt, and the doctor says "it's on par with a night of heavy drinking, nothing you'll miss."

You're asking if whipping your brain around inside your skull is bad for it?

The answer you're looking for is "yes."

I get a hazy fuzzy feeling when I do it. I believe it's bad for you-kills brain cells anyways....plus make me more sensitive to loud sounds....

I get the hazy 'im gonna pass out' feeling when I head-bang too
I see some people almost throwing their heads off their shoulders and can only dream of being able to pull off such a manly head bang.
Head banging is kinda dead here in australia now anyway. The hardcore scene has taken over and everyone gets in circles and throws punches and kicks... Seeing as im a blackbelt in karate I finally feel like my time has come!! Now people can look at me in awe as I did them!!

Cliff Burton was a virtual human bobblehead with all the headbanging he did, and look what happened to him! See what happens with to much headbanging...

I usually only get a little soreness the next day in my neck. But, then again, I don't headbang constantly. I do other stuff. I move around stage, make faces, kneel, put my foot on the bass drum, all sorts of different stuff. Try some variety. It helps get the crowd into it more than just constant headbanging.

Never got pains in the back of my head.... on the neck area though, I've had days when I've basically had to hold my head up with my hands because the neck muscles just couldn't do it.

But that was before I started doing a 15 minute stretching/warming up ritual before each gig. The movement basically is a (neck/shoulder) muscle exercise, so the same principles that apply to other exercises apply to headbanging too. Saves from the pain and is a good way to concentrate too.

You actually don't have any nerves (for pain sensation) inside your brain that respond to injury. Thats why tumours and the like can go undetected for so long.
However, when you feel pain in your head like from headbanging, it's usually from bursting (little) blood vessels - but that won't cause the pain. It's the blood itself that causes the pain (chemical imbalance etcetera) If anyone here has had a car accident or been assaulted badly - you'll know what i mean.
The other painful time is when the brain is starved - like when you're hungover - it's the lack of oxygen/iron etc from your dehydration that causes the pain.
Sorry - i work in radiology...............

So if you hurt your brain - chances are you're BLEEDING MAN!!!!

In the immortal words of Henny Youngman, "Doctor, doctor...it hurts when I do this."

"Don't do that."
