God gave you five fingers. Use them.

My old bass teacher taught me the "1 finger per fret" way. My current teacher was taught on Double Bass and admits to having a weak 3rd finger because of non-use and he isn't as strict with what way I play, with 3 fingers or 4. But I use 4 because I'm so used to it.

Why limit yourself? If you find using 4 fingers is hard and you're not used to it, then that's something you may want to work on, something to challenge yourself with.
