Help a new slapper?

Sign in to disble this ad
I only just figured out how to slap correctly. Until now all I got was the sound of string meeting frets, but today I woke up in the zone and I can get some good notes out. Things is, I'm always hitting adjacent strings when I slap a certain string. Im sure it just boils down to practice, but is there a certain way you got better at slapping you could share with me?

Practice.

Slap every string starting at the E string, then the A string, then then D string, then the G string. then go back up, from the G string to to D string to the A string to the E string.

Do that over and over and over again for about 20 hours. You'll eventually get it.

That's what I did. I never hit adjacent strings anymore. Ever.

Nice!!! Try slapping any exercises you're working on, scales, etc...slowly, with different rhythms, 1/8-triplets-1/16th's, making sure you're really hearing each note. You can also try slapping and popping octaves, for example, on the A string:
D-B-C-C#, slap the A string and pop the G string octave, then move the exercise to the E and D string, A-F#-G-G#.
Also, check out http://www.slapit.com/
this book has helped out many an up and comer SLAPPER!!!
Good Luck!!!
The key is looping your ideas, and playing groups of notes that work well together, the above octave ex. is kind of a throw back to the disco era.
