help out a new guy please

I have two questions. I have just recently bought a bass and need your guys' suggestions. Should i start with a pick or fingerpicking? As for the other question its really complex but please read anyways. I plug the bass into the pedal and into a regular tube drive (meaning not bought for bass i bought it for my regular guitar) and i have to tune the volume really high and i get major feedback and i can't get the distortion or even the right volume that i want because its so touchy. also my chord that i plug into the bass dosen't go in all the way its sticks out about this much | | (just a millimeter more than that. is that normal. will anyone please help me?
