Help please! I need help and recomendations for learning a song
YouTube - Church of the Machine - Symphony X
It`s a song of symphony x it is tuned down 1 step...I am having trouble getting that sound good in that tuning...I am having some troubles with this, cause I need to learn it in 10 days...
I am more a fusion player, the fast 16th notes of the riff at 5/4 need a 3 finger technique, but I think I can deal with that parts at 150 bpm. The problem is playing with my fingers at that speed with the losened strings. This can get a lot of clank.
The problem is that that riff is almost imposible with standard tuning and using the fifht string. Other problem is I`ve never played with a pick. Are there any bass players thart play with there fingers and tuning down one step??? Do you think I can sucess??
It is for an audition and playing that song I will get the job.

Now I`ve noticed the bass player plays with his fingers and tuning down one step, I cant notice if it clanks cause the bass is low in the mix, so I need to adjust the bass??

short answer (imho): no. i can go all down a half step and thats it before the strings dont have enough bounce to them to play with three fingers (and i cant even get close to playing over the neck, as that is just absurdly clanky).

from your post, im guessing you know what youre doing. i assume youve adjusted the saddle and neck if/as needed.

ive tried my best, but since ive played the same basses with the same strings for a dozen years or so, im just used to it. im in a similar problem where im probably going to have to go to funky tuning, and the advice i got from the string forum was circle k strings.

again, you sound like you know what youre talking about, so this might not be a technique issue. you might want to hit up strings or setup.

A few suggestions I can think of to try are raising the action, higher gauge strings, or pluck the strings closer to the bridge. I personally would go with higher gauge strings to get rid of some of that string flop.

Sound advice. Also, ask yourself, if you need to play a style that doesn't suit you to get in, is this really the band for you? Maybe it is, sometimes putting yourself in an uncomfortable situation helps you grow. Just something to ponder.
