| Help with proper plucking

When I play a riff and it moves on to something else, or when I have a repeating riff, my plucking fingers want to restart back to the index finger like they want to be coordinated with my fretting hand. This seems to be the case wether I'm plucking with 2,3,or 4 fingers.
Am I supposed to alternate fingers through the entire song?
I'm still a little green so if this is an issue I should be able to fix it now, while I'm still learning
