I was a 2 finger guy up until november 08 when my band started playing some protest the hero and august burns red. There is NO way you can play any of their songs with 2 fingers only. (On a side note, thats how I finally started playing with my pinky on the left hand)

great exercises would be to play something like this

One note for each finger, ring, middle, index. In that order.
-7-6-5-7-6-5-9-7-6-9-7-6-12-9-7-12-9-7
play this pattern up and down, again, and again, and again, and again, until you can chaingun through it and actually pic out the notes you are playing. It's a lot of fun and very useful for showing off.

Another good exercise is playing metalcore breakdowns. It's always the same note but the focus is on rythme, on the plucking hand.

A quick example: Speech Impediment, from August Burns red. The first breakdown, after the intro and 1st riff is playing in Open C (Dropped C tuning)

basically its: 0---0-0-0---0---0-0-0---0-0--0---0-0-(then some notes)
Or, the way I learn every breakdown since I started getting the hang of them:

1-3-1-0-3-1-2-1-0-2-Notes (Those arent frets, it's the amount of 0s in your N-tuplets)

And the way I play it: (Ring, Middle, Index)
1---3---1---0--3----1----2---1-----2
R--RMI--R----RMI----I---RM---R----RM

The second breakdown starts with 4-3, so I do RMIR-RMI

etc. etc...

The hardest part is getting rid of the gallopping sound. I'm still working on that.
