Hi.....and help!

Hi there bass lovers first time posting here first time on the site too but I reckon there's plenty here I could learn

I come asking for help with bass playing but I should explain my past a bit. Started when I was like 15 thinking "yea I'll play Rhcp around the world and muse's new born straight away!" and I did learn how to regurgitate the music I never understood how it fit together in a deeper way.

The rest of my music learning got just as deep I learnt a few chords and scales nothing to much though. I played for a few more years but I allways had the same problem. I'm not very creative. I have fun finding chords and scales but I find myself stuck in boring timing's and rhythm's like I'm playing just punk (No offence you mental punk bassists )

I stopped playing from 20-22 nearly two years because I got frustrated with not being creative (probublay impatient too) but listening to jamiriquia and john paul jones and the likes I feel the love for bass again and I've decided it's time to try again now I feel fresh.

So saying that I have no calice on my finger tips, still not feeling creative and my hand/finger strength/endurance has dropped I wanna learn how to play properly this time lol! Only thing I've gained from my time not playing is I've learnt how to count beats better while listening to music.

I'll be reading the sticky suggestions about how/what to practice but I really feel it might come to much if I can't feel more creative. I normally play on my own and wonder if a drummer/drum beats might help me out but any advice would be very much appreciated

(I know this might be a bad problem for a musician but I refuse to just give up without trying....)

Thanks for reading

My advice is listen to everything, dont just stick to stuff you like or listen to or a particular genre, listen to everything!!! Even stuff you hate! listen to what the bass part is doing. The more you listen to, the better you will get at being able to create a bassline that fits with a particular style and therefore making you a more versitile bass player.

Get recordings of things and play along to them, use your ears to try and work out what key things are in and what chord changes there are. Or start playing along to your favourite songs , even if you are not playing the correct bass line, play something.

thats sad man. Sometimes I git real discouraged about my playing but I always come out of it. I've learned its not about being the best. Also although reading theory books totally sucks it does pay off. I think it's a lot easier to be creative when u no theory

Being in a band has been the most proggressive learning experience I've had. Granted I started a music theory/composition class near the same time, but I've learned so much from playing with other people. A band is the best learning/creative tool known to musicians.
