How Can I Stop The Blues?

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok i need some help with a problem i have. Everytime i write a cool line or riff it always ends up becoming a 12 bar blues. I like blues and all but i cant use them in the songs my band plays.

So what can i do to prevent this and get better lines?

Any suggestions would help.

Thanks

Think of a song that you like the changes to and figure out how that works in that song.

Look at your song and figure how you could work something similar into your song.

Study other songs you dig. Just expand on different styles of playing. What I do in my band is just expirement until I find something that sounds good with the song. It's all about expansion in this case.

Keep rockin.

What type of music does your band play? Is it the progression you're having trouble getting away from, or the riffs?

If it's the progession, you just need to make a point of going to something else besides I, IV, V. Try some basic jazz moves, like ii, V, I or I, vi, ii, V. Try going to the iii or vi when you would normally go to the I.
