How close to the bridge do you slap/pop?

Heres the thing. Maybe my action is lame, maybe my bass is just lame, maybe I'M just lame. Either way, my slaps only sound punchy if they hit about 2-3 inches from the bridge, otherwise they are weak. I find it hard to pop at this spot though because the string barely bends so I often pop a weak note. Anyway, I'm sure I'll improve at popping over time, but I'm wondering if you guys find it possible to slap closer to the neck , even over the pickup or even closer than that? Or is where I slap just a common slapping ground? Thanks for any insight!

I'm far from a good slapper, but I usually slap right at the end of the (24 fret) fingerboard or a bit closer to the neck pickup. I tend to get more bass when I slap closer to the pickup. On my bass, slapping always sound somewhat weak compared to a plucked note so I seldom blend these techniques.

I think most people slap approximately where I slap. I've never heard about anyone slapping as close to the bridge as you mention (2-3 in from it).

Check out the instruction videos on Youtube with Wooten etc., and the sticky thread here in technique about slapping. All you need to know might be there already.
