How to dampen slap?

Sign in to disble this ad
hey, i am having a problem with slap.
i can slap ok and am getting a good sound. But when i hit the string the others all ring. I have tried dampening the sound with my right hand also my left, but it seems that i still get some ringing. Does anybody have any ideas on how to stop this?

You're already heading into the right direction. Do most of the damping with the left hand (upper strings and deadnotes and staccato on the lower strings) and eventually basic lower string damping with the base of the right-hand palm (depending on your slapping technique).

Ditto on primarily using your left hand, don't be afraid to use all the fingers you've got, including your thumb to mute strings that shouldn't be ringing. I find that the "lazy" rocker fretting hand technique with your thumb resting on the top of the fretboard tends to work best for slap lines with lots of open notes.
