How do I get this Jazz Bass tone?

Check out the bass solo starting at about 1:40...

I've got an American Jazz Deluxe 4 & an Ampeg SVP-Pro...can I get close to that tone?

Any advice on strings, bass & amp settings??

That tone is very specific to that p+j congifuration. I love it. It has a great punchy feel. I've been able to get close by cranking the bridge p'up and having the neck p'up about 3/4 on my jazz. But you really need that P pickup at the neck to get that great sound.

+1 on what XGabriel says.

I also think the G-K 800RB and Hartke 410XL cabinet set up contributes to that sound too.

Neil Stubenhaus playing a 5 string Taylor doesn't hurt either!!

OK, so with my JBD, I'll set my pickup pan pot a bit toward the bridge. Any tips on EQ? The JBD has 3-band active EQ, and the SVP-Pro preamp has I think 9 band on one side...

Roundwounds, right?

I'vegot an Avatar cabs (a 2x10+horn & a 15+horn) and have turned to horns off to reduce hiss. Should I try bringing them back up?

I usually keep my horns on at about 1/4 to 2/3 on my cabs. Try a slight boost of each the bass and mids on your bass OBP, and set your eq on your amp flat. Definetly roundwounds. I would recommend DR Highbeams.

Also, you might be able to find Neil Steubenhaus's gear listed on a website. Hey, you never know-- you might be able to email him and ask him about that concert. (Bass, strings, settings, etc.)

Sounds like lots of mids and the P / J combo making that sound.

Not sure if your ampeg would be able to punch it out exactly like that, but cranking some mids is where it's at.

Anyone else think that that clip kinda sucked?

Yeah, it was a bit too fusiony for me, and I didn't exactly hear any blues changes... it was more like noodling over one chord (not that there's necessarily anything wrong with that, mind you)...

P+J config, boosted mids, playing on the P pickup (obviously) and keeping it slightly blended towards the neck pickup. Not by much though, just slightly.

That, and focusing your attack to make some of that low-end growl come through when you want it to.
