How do I work towards lightening my attack?

Technique sounds good for now

Self taught bassist of ten years+, habits developed during my image conscious "metal only" phase - rough, neck strangling bassist trying to reform here

Recent comment by guitarist that I am not smooth through sections of Crazy Little Thing Called Love, usually the C transition (when on my 4 I need to go up the frets on the G string)

Broke my technique down and realised the primary problem is that I attack the G string like I do the E and hammer the string and also tend to bend it off the fretboard sometimes!!

I'm fine flowing through the the rest of it pretty much.

Given my self taught restrictions and lack of desire for formal teaching for now ($ and time), should I aim to resolve this issue by altering my string fingering per string, or lightening it all over and amping up for more headroom and re-approaching my entire fingering?

Oh. PS. We are starting to look for gigs June 15 onwards.

Cheers

I'd say it's a good idea to lighten the touch all round. Simplest way of doing that is to just turn the volume way up. Then you'll just have to play lighter or suffer the consequences (ears, speakers and amp going bust, and band mates giving you a good beating.

You can also try making a block of wood of same height as you pickups and fitting that between fretboard and pup. That will work towards stopping you from digging in quite as much.

This is the best dynamics excersise I've ever come across

Set your metronome to a relatively slow speed and pick an excersise to play-I just play the modes. play the pattern with the metronome using your normal attack. then ,as slowly as you can, pluck the strings softer and softer until you are barely audible. Then,as slowly as you can, pluck the strings harder and harder until the strings start to make unholy noises. the point of this excersise is to make the gap between loudest and softest as big as possible, while staying in time with the metronome.

Cool, I'll try that. Sounds like a good exercise. Thanks.
