I fret the D on the D string, 12th fret, with my middle finger's first joint.

I remember an old issue of either Bass Player or Guitar Player saying that you had to tune the G string to an A to play that riff and it was impossible any other way, then recently they did an about face because they must have seen Tom Hamilton playing it at the 12th fret.

I've played this in a cover band. I use a bassballs for the chours section (trick is to play lightly and consistant).
I play in open A, second string 5th hamer on to 9th, then on
A string hamer offs 5th and 3rd.
Seems to work well for me, get the rythm right and it works.

I've always loved the sound of that riff! The rest of the song is fun too.

I have played it in a cover band, As I remember I used my 2nd (middle) finger on the A string 12th fret and pretty much leave it there, 3rd finger on the G-12th, 4th finger on the G-14th, then 3rd on D-12th, index on D-11th. Leaving the second finger on the A-12th I could keep that bit of a 'droning-A' effect I felt in that lick.

Peace,

Al

It was Guitar For The Practicing Musician & was transcribed by Andy "I can't transcribe properly" Aledort.....the same guy who transcripted "Dig" by Mudvayne & in the bass transcription it said "with pick" as did his bass transcription at the beginning of "Iron Man"....like he was in the studio w/ Sabbath in 1970 when they recorded it.....Geezer only used a pick at the very end.
