How do you "approach" the pick?

Sign in to disble this ad
Chris Squire "Star Licks" Interview - YouTube

What I usually do is, I slowly open the door into the room where I know the pick is located. Once I'm in the room, I avoid making eye contact with the pick. I can see it out of the corner of my eye as it sits on my desk, and I pretend I am focusing on something else in the room just so the pick doesn't suspect anything. I then slowly and nonchalantly make my way over to the side of the room where the pick is located, and just when the pick least suspects it, I suddenly leap over and grab it!!!

That is how I "approach" the pick.

I just fish it out of my pocket, and hold it in my mouth while I play.

Excellent technique! I'll bet the guys at StarLicks never even heard of that "approachment."

I try to fish it out of my pocket meanwhile the whole chorus I was going to use it on has passed by the time I've got it and not a quarter and a receipt for coffee.

Any approach that involves "Fish"ing out your pick results in good tone.

Poor Chris - having to work with that "dude!" style interviewer...

Thing is he didn't have to work with such an amateur dufus. You know there was a "what was I thinking?" moment for Chris at some point there.

But Chris is a nice guy and probably figured "Ah, this young buck'll do!"

He probably didn't fuss over the "finer details" like much of the folks here.

Then, maybe yeah "Gosh, this guy is ON something"

Good on him for it too.

And for the record I keep a pick tucked into the strings or pick guard so I approach the pick as I approach the bass.

I have actually met Mr. Squire, and he is a very cool, laid back guy (we talked about the 4001CS I owned at the time, and he casually asked in his soft spoken English accent "how does it sound?")

I'm sure Chris knew what a total dweeby "duuuuude" he was dealing with during that interview, and how absurd many of the interviewer's questions were, but Chris is the consummate gentleman.

Oh wow. I envy you!

I got to see Yes for the first time in my life this past spring. Yeah - every time I see an interview with Mr Squire I can't help but think what a great guy to hang out with he must be.

Ever see the interview with him talking about Jimi Hendrix? Really funny

Thanks. I lucked out and got to go backstage after a Yes concert in 2001. I got to chat with Jon, Chris, Alan, and Steve, each separately. I was in a Yes tribute band at the time. Having been a Yes fan since 1971, it was a real thrill for me to meet them.

That's awesome.

Strangely, I joined the game late, as I got my Ric b/c of Paul D'Amour's tone on Tool's "Undertow" album - ironically, with him playing a Squire signature bass

So naturally, I had to find out who had such an excellent sounding sig bass. End of story.

Yes the Hendrix story reelly shows how laid-back Chris is.
