I've been trying to teach myself, but I just can't do it... first of all, what is it called and how do you do it? Any help would be much appreciated.

i think the OP is looking for some answers on open hammer pluck.
a search on youtube for some of victor's technique videos will get you somewhere.

and next time write a question that can be answered. no one likes a dumb post!

OP - if you can't explain it, post a youtube link or a song showing what it is that you want to do.
Victor does a LOT of cool things, nobody can explain the "it" you're looking for until we know what "it" is.

Actually, all it is, is a variation of the Monk/Wes Montgomery thumbstyle picking on steroids. Vic has one or two videos out that explain it pretty well.

Have fun with that!

No, but honestly, its lots of practice. I have been playing for 5 years, and I am still afraid to even attempt that video. I can do some of the things he does, but not like him.

Remember, he is Victor Wooten!

Watch lots of videos, read lots, take lessons, etc.,, and PRACTICE!

Those are harmonics. You might have a look at this thread: What is a Harmonic and how do you preform one?
