How do you play bass one handed?

I saw a bass player last week playing the bass with just one hand (he played keyboards with his right hand). How is that done? It sounded like he had both hands playing but it was only one? Is it a special bass or set-up OR is it done with an effect pedal?

i'm gonna say high output pickups and taping the fret board with just the left hand (fingers)
