How does he do it....

I'm listening to the Yellowjackets Christmas Album "Peace Round" and Jimmy has such a great sound on God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen - very smooth, uprighty sounding. I know he's doing it on a fretted Roscoe 6 string. I know you roll off a little treble, play over the fingerboard, etc. but I still don't seem to get that.

I've seen them live and it's the same thing. He can play a walking line that sounds almost uprighty and then turn around and play a cutting solo.

What else can one do to get that kind of sound?

Use his fingers? It may be a bit of processing, along with his particular technique. Maybe you could see if he has a Facebook page and ask.

have you heard the Take 6 version with The Yellowjackets?
Take 6 - God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman - YouTube

From the '80s...MTV & VH1 used to play the video. back when it was "cool" (I guess) to play Xmas videos during the Season.
The video was on youtube...not finding it right now.

Video from metacafe-

Like you said, he plays over the fingerboard for the "uprighty" thing...he probably drops back & plucks a bit harder over the bridge pickup for the solo thing.
Same thing for Jaco.

Haslip does play a lot of fretless bass, too. Prior to that, though, he was able to coax a fretless vibe out of his fretted basses...he would, very quickly, play the two notes below his target note.
If the target note is "B"...he would pluck the "A" & then quickly hammer into the "A#" & "B". I recall an old magazine interview where he discussed this ('cause people were asking if he coul also play fretted bass...when, in fact, fretted bass was all he was playing at the time).

Another thing that helps, IMO.
Your mindset & attitude + the sound you hear in your head & then making that happen & come out of your speaker cabinet.
For the "uprighty" vibe, think like an URB player...hear it in your head.
Then for the solo thing...think like a horn player & adjust accordingly.

Lifelong project for us mere mortals.

+1! I have a couple of Yellowjacket videos. He drives me nuts watching him play. The left handed thing is okay, but when I hear the notes go up and the hand goes up...

I know he does play fretless, but I think live he's exclusively (at least when I've seen him) that fretted Roscoe. I do "think upright" when I try it. I'll keep trying. Like you said, lifelong project.
