Like you said, he plays over the fingerboard for the "uprighty" thing...he probably drops back & plucks a bit harder over the bridge pickup for the solo thing.
Same thing for Jaco.
Haslip does play a lot of fretless bass, too. Prior to that, though, he was able to coax a fretless vibe out of his fretted basses...he would,
very quickly, play the two notes below his target note.
If the target note is "B"...he would pluck the "A" & then quickly hammer into the "A#" & "B". I recall an old magazine interview where he discussed this ('cause people were asking if he coul also play fretted bass...when, in fact, fretted bass was all he was playing at the time).
Another thing that helps, IMO.
Your mindset & attitude + the sound you hear in your head & then making that happen & come out of your speaker cabinet.
For the "uprighty" vibe, think like an URB player...hear it in your head.
Then for the solo thing...think like a horn player & adjust accordingly.
