How to get this kind of sound ? (listen -> video)

Hello,

First of all I'm a beginner bass player...

I always been impressed by this kind of sound:

Ok here the guy play a fretless kind of upright-kind-of-sound bass but the first time I've heard that was with Dominique Di Piazza playing with John Mc Laughlin and some other times with random bass players...and it was never with frettless basses, always with classic fretted basses (Warwick for Di Piazza).

For me it's the ultimate bass sound that I'd like to get but I have no idea how... (PS: I have a Warwick FN with an Ampeg BA112 and Pod X3)

Thanks for the help... :-)
