Sign in to disble this ad
you guys know it, the metallic, somewhat clicky bass tone, any advice or tips on how I can attain it? It it just the bass? effects? maybe technique?
a good example would be in the song "the clincher" by Chevelle

i own an ibanez gsr205, and a 10watt amp, hehe... newbie, i know

thanks

you need to crank the treble on your amp but also crank the low end to match it because if you dont you will just get clacky crap and you need to play with attack lots of it. and it also helps to get stainless steel strings like dr hi beams or NEW nickle wound strings will work but not as well.

just remember it has to be controled attack or it will sound like hell.

Agree with everything above, PLUS set your action lower so that you get "good" buzzing with your already harder attack.

also get very thin strings, they'll hit the frets and give you the sound you want

everything above plus with the pick get a heavier thicker pick, or thin but strong!!

try the purple dunlop tortex pick.

I love Joe's tone in the clincher. But yeah definately use a pick and use a mid scoop (if you don't know what that is it is when you boost both bass and treble and cut out a lot of the mids).

also, in that particular song you named, it sounds like he's got a bit of overdrive on, just enough to add some grit to the sound.

Yeah, that Chevelle song sounds like he's overdriving it just a bit. He's probably using a tube amp.

I dont think his eq is all that scooped. You hear it so well partly due to the midrange. His lows are probably flat, maybe even cut.
