I sometimes do just the opposite - I'll occasionally use my thumb to play the bottom strings and my fingers to play the top strings. (I think that's what you meant too, BTW)
When I first picked up a bass and thought I'd teach myself, I started playing using my thumb to strum the strings. This is also how Leo Fender assumed people would play bass when he invented the instrument, that's why early Fenders have "tug bars" below the top string.
I found, as have most bass players, that a two fingered strumming technique based on upright bass 'Pizz' technique is best in about 95% of playing situations.
It's great if you have a somewhat unusual way of playing bass, but don't short yourself by not learning the usual techniques as well.
