I have mine pretty high, i tried the low thing but found it very uncomfortable. I like having the fretboard right in front of me.

Mine around waist-level, on the lower end of the scale...

At your feet--------------/---------------------right at your neck
mine

This might belong in Technique, but I think you're okay here. I have mine pretty low for playing rock, and pretty high for playing jazzy stuff and blues. And melody.

Fair enough. I deleted it but you quoted me real quick!
Low is the fashionable thing - extremely awkward playing IMO

IMHO and what I like is wearing at the same height as if I'm sitting...
That way whether practicing, performing live or in studio, the bass is always at the same location... I do love how a J style body puts the neck higher up for the fretting hand... IMHO & IMHE

Same height standing up as it is at sitting down, allows for comfortable playing without wrist fatique in the least. I tried it higher up but my right arm tended to cramp up and according to everybody in my band it made me look shorter

Mine is a bit high..above beltline ...not early McCartney high...but high

+1 on the sitting standing thing...thats how mine is set up...sitting it just hangs so it is in same position as standing

Same as the other guy; when I stand it it doesn't go anywhere.

It depends for me. For slapping I like my bass high, since it gives a better angle for the thumb. When playing metal I need it low, since my arm has a tendency to cramp up if I have it too high. Might have to do with me being roughly 6'5", and I have pretty long arms. So I have it low for comfort, not looks. It's not cooler to have it low IMO.

I've always worn mine fairly high (centered around the belly-button or above), but find that getting an aggressive attack (like Steve Harris, for example) comes much more naturally when wearing it lower. I was actually very surprised at how much difference just lowering the playing position had on the way I played. Also- One way is more comfortable for the right hand, and one is more comfortable for the left (in my case)...

Right at the waist. I agree that lower isn't cooler, but too high can definitely increase the nerd factor. Nobody looks at the bass player anyways, they are too busy gettin down to the groove.

Upper-waist level for most of mine, although I tend to wear my 4-strings a touch lower.

Low enough so my right hand and wrist isn't in an awkward position, and high enough so my left wrist isn't bent over trying to reach the strings. More or less in a position where the contours of the body are allowed to do their job.

I have mine fairly high but not TOO high. I can't stand playing when it's extremely low, it's like I'm reaching for the bass!

If it's TOO high though, I'm just uncomfortable.
