How much do you value timbre?

My band down tunes 1 1/2 steps. My drummer always wants me to play in a higher register. I know it changes for every song but it seems like he wants me to do it every song. Any thoughts?

I had a Peavey Combo 300 amp that had 'Timbre' on one of the knobs. Bass...Midrange...Treble... Timbre (?). I thought it was an inside joke, cause it was like, a Peavey.
And the drummer can tell you where to play when you tell him where to hit the snare.

ask the drummer why. Is it because of his taste, or is it because he can't hear you?

If it's because he can't hear you, then either HE's too loud or your bass tone ain't cutting the mix.

If it's your tone, try boosting the mids.

If it's him, well... nobody ever complains about drummers being too quiet...except drummers.

Does that mean YOU also tune down 1.5 steps? That is one potential problem.

As above, if he is wanting you to play an octave up, he is probably
not hearing anything but mud.

To cut through the mix, don't lose your mids and their harmonics.
Slacker strings can change the harmonic content
of the note, and 'scooping' your mids using a smiley face eq
doesn't help you cut through.

Your guitar player will whine if you don't tune like him, but too
bad, you are playing a bass, not a guitar. You don't eq your
tone like him either.

You could look for a 5 string.

You could go for a Hipshot key extender. It will do 1.5 steps on the E.

Another option is to change the string diameters a bit and tune
B-E-A-D. You may have to recut the nut to do this and get the right action.
.065 - .085 - .105 .120

You could also try the stock heavy sets, for example, GHS Boomers come in Heavy
for 34" Longscale at .050 - .070 - .095 and .115.

That might be the cheapest way to get a better result. Those
may tune up to a better C# if you detune.

But don't scoop the mids.

I value timbre after rhythm & before note choice... it's that important

Without timbre, everything else in music is null (to me anyway). There's even places in music where the timbre is more important than what notes are being played.
