how to mute when using a pick?

I've been using only fingerstyle when playing bass, and that way I mute by using both my fretting hand (when going to a a lower string) and my right thumb (when going up). However, when I try to pick, since my right thumb isn't there to mute, I can't get it to sound good.
So my question is, what's a good technique for muting when you pick? Some guy I know says palm muting can give you carpal tunnel syndrome, is that true?

yeah, if you do it wrong. if your playing with a pick like me you just plam mute like you would on guitar

I find myself doing more fretting-hand muting with a pick than I do on fingerstyle actually, for that reason, since I don't have spare plucking-hand finger to mute with. So the left hand in my case ends up helping out more with muting...as far as palm-muting, that's completely different, as the note does still sound, it's just a dampened, non-sustainy note.
