i would say mouth but you may have a weird reflex and swallow it. I know I almost did one time or a couple.

Glue it to your thumb. Or you could just teach your middle, ring and pinky finger how to do it while you are still holding the pick. I can't do that yet, all I can use that technique for is to play chords, which is still pretty hard because you have to be careful with your attack on the pick or you drown out the higher notes.

I knew a guy who used to use a heavy gauge guitar thumb pick. He could switch between fingerstyle and pick quickly but had to remove the thumb pick if he wanted to slap. For me, I'll keep one nearby, like taped to the mic stand.

I would hold the pick with my ring finger curled around it when not using it. Might take a little practice to do this fluidly.

Or, drop the pick when you don't want to use it, and tape a bunch to a mic stand that you can easily grab off when you want to resume using the pick.

Jauqo III-X has put up some pretty good techniques for this. I think he holds the pick between the last two fingers. It's tough to search talkbass but he had some information on here a couple of years ago. You may want to pm him. You can also use one of those picks that wraps around (and holds onto) your thumb

Of your bass has a pickguard, your problem is solved, you'll just have to jam a pick under it in an area quickly reachable on your bass like above the pickups.

otherwise, there are small pickholders that you can stick behind your bass.

Why not just use a pick holder...one of the ones that attatches to a mike stand? If you don't use a mike stand, then just attach it to whoever in the band does use one. This way, you can line up about 8-10 picks in the holder. If you go through them all in one set, reload before the next set. They're cheap, about $6-10, I beleive.

I like the thumb pick idea. I'm gonna give that a try.

duct tape. get a small piece and make it double-sided, stick it to your bass, then stick the pick to it.

The only problem with these is that after a while they feel tight on your thumb.

I would suggest AGAINST pick in mouth. I swallowed a pick on two separate occasions, and it's NOT fun to pass hard plastic.

I've had to do that switch before. I used my Thumb and Index to hold the pick and then for the fingerstyle parts I'd play with my Middle and Ring.

I know Matt Freeman did this on the video for Fall Back Down. There's a quick 2 second view at 13 seconds. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=292O_XQhy0o

For years I used a thumb pick - but not the 'standard' ones you would get at the music store. Those could turn the tip of your thumb blue.

Somehwere many years ago I came across some Ernie Ball thumb picks that were not the tortoise shell varieity or the heavy white plastic types - they were much thinner and came in white, yellow, pink - may have been some other colors. The important thing was that they were not tight at all - almost as if they were a thin gauge. They were pretty long though, so I would trim the end so that it was curved - somewhat like the end of your pinky would be like and extended about 1/4 to 1/2" from the thumb. I could go back and forth between the pick and fingers very easily. When I used the thumbpick I would just grip it like I was holding a regular pick - and when it was time to go back to finger I would just do it...pick remained on my thumb for future use. I'm not a slapper - so I didn't have issues with it getting in the way but I would think you adjust the position of it if you wanted to. If I needed to remove it I would hang it on the mic cable or on the guitar cable - the thumb loop allowed it to stay on the cable.

I still have a couple of those left. The last time I bought them I think I bought a gross of them. I'll see if they still make them and get back with the model number. I need to order some more anyways...

(a little while later...) Ok - try this link: https://store.ernieball.com/index/57...27.24658.0.0.0
What I used was the thin thumb picks. Looks like they have red, black, yellow and pink now - no white. You can get them direct from Ernie Ball in a pack of 6 or 24. I'll see if I can find one of the picks a get a picture of it showing the trimming I did.

BTW - works great for guitar too.

Dave

i do this switch a lot and it depends on what finger style part im playing next.
generally when i switch from pick to finger i have to hit a pedal or two as well.
if the fingerstyle part is going to be slower, whole notes, nothing too rhythmic, and i'll be picking again soon then i just continue holding the pick normally and finger with my middle finger. if it takes a bit more fingerstyle than that i put the pick in my teeth not in the actual mouth... thats just weird...

I alternate between the two myself. I usually have several picks on top of my cab. I usually just either drop the pick or put it in my mouth and hold just the tip of it with my lips.

I like to curl my ring and pinky fingers and hold the pick against my palm.
