Depends on whether you're in the city or not.

Its played in the city, as opposed to country bass lines, which are played in the country.

I think the real issue though, is how prevalent suburban bass lines are in modern music? Chew on that one for a while.

There are times when all you really want to hear is some pleasant middle-class funk. Gettin' groovy and making a mortgage payment. Straight jivin'.

Is "urban" still a code word for "brown skin", or have we moved past that?

Well, to that I have to ask (in typical Jauqo fashion)...

Is there such a thing as an 'urban bass line'?

EDIT - oops, LowDown Hal beat me to it. Had to get the 'Jauqo stirring the pot' reference in there, though!

This could be part II of the Neo Soul thread.

Oy Vey! Is a thread on Suburban bass lines far behind this one?

I've noticed Hip hop basslines are often samples or fragments of basslines, sometimes sped up or slowed down to fit the beat. The result seems to be altered pitches. The same with many hip hop choruses- often sped up changing the key from the original into a alvin and the Chipmunks meets Motown or 70's soul sound. I like Public Enemy and KRS-1. New stuff seems less creative, less artistic.

To attempt to actually answer Jauqo's question, I'd say urban bassline are extremely prevalent. Most modern hip-hop and dance music either samples directly, or is heavily influenced by, funk classics from the 70s and 80s, with basslines that definately fit the classical definition of "urban". Now, if you want to change the meaning of "urban" to mean those bassists who grew up and work in big cities, the variety is endless! Dee Dee Ramone would be, in that case, a typical urban bass player, as I think alot of the Ramone's music was a direct reaction to living in an urban environment.

perhaps becoming less prevalent due to the fact that your basic full time musician can no longer afford to live in most cities?
