I think the real issue though, is how prevalent suburban bass lines are in modern music? Chew on that one for a while.

Is there such a thing as an 'urban bass line'?
EDIT - oops, LowDown Hal beat me to it. Had to get the 'Jauqo stirring the pot' reference in there, though!

The result seems to be altered pitches. The same with many hip hop choruses- often sped up changing the key from the original into a alvin and the Chipmunks meets Motown or 70's soul sound. I like Public Enemy and KRS-1. New stuff seems less creative, less artistic. |

Most modern hip-hop and dance music either samples directly, or is heavily influenced by, funk classics from the 70s and 80s, with basslines that definately fit the classical definition of "urban". Now, if you want to change the meaning of "urban" to mean those bassists who grew up and work in big cities, the variety is endless! Dee Dee Ramone would be, in that case, a typical urban bass player, as I think alot of the Ramone's music was a direct reaction to living in an urban environment. |
