I did what I still do - thought up of a bass line I thought sounded cool, sang it to myself, then tried to find every note, and play it, regardless of theory, composition techniques, whatever.

hows that working for you? I might start doing that soon

anyways i started by destroying my fingers in the 1st week. Playing with crap fretting technique(pressing too hard) for 8hrs+ per day. Put me out for awhile :-(

During my starting phase I thought slapping was the **** but got bored of it after awhile

Like I said, thats still what I do and I dont think I'll ever change my method.

IMHO, playing hard at first is good, although I've been playing less than a year, so take my comments with a grain of salt here, it worked out well for me. Little by little, I realized what was wrong with the way I fretted, played the strings, etc, and corrected that to my liking, with the help of comments I found on talkbass and with my bass instructor.

Slapping is still as fun as it was when I started though. You just need to learn new lines, elaborate things some, play with hammer ons, mutes, etc...

i actually wrote one of my best basslines within a month of me playing.

by best i mean it sounded the coolest. not sure how many 'rules' it broke.

but sadly, there is no recordings and i don't remember it.
