How's my tone?

Sign in to disble this ad
Here is a recording from last year when i was a freshman in high school (found it on my comp). its my band and i recording a song using two condensor microphones. we later added the vocals, but here is just the instrumental part. the drummer was also a freshman, 1st guitar solo sophmore and last guitar solo junior. i was wondering if you guys can comment on my tone, i was playing on a skjold pro 5. the quality isn't great cuz of our limitations with recording equipment, and my playing isn't great either, i got alot better from when this was recorded heh. so comments on the tone i got through the bass? also comments on the fills too would be appreciated so i can use those tips for next time, and just playing in general. also comments on everything too hah, anything is good though, thanks.

http://www.imgdump.net/music/democ021.mp3

btw, this is the middle section of the song, i had to cut it so it would fit on the imagedump, it starts from the fills and then ends with a rather..odd ending

oh, and there are some drum fills that if you listen carefully i played with him =P

a lil muddy for my tastes, you say vocals were put on top of this? i think it might be ok if it was a solo in the middle of a song, just seems to busy...

Ya, sounds like you have too much tone rolled off for my tastes, but plenty of people like a tone like that, Pete included. You might boost your treble a bit, or roll off less of the tone.

I cant coment on the playing, as its likely better than I could do, but it was a tad busy.

i'm a busy man. lol, for this particular song i don't think the bass was boosted..but this is how it came out after it was recorded. i personally like it although live it wouldn't sound this bass-y. my roots are in the upright bass so i tend to push it towards the bass-y side in general, but still, not on this song

It does sound kinda muted, like a DB would as well. Not sure if you were doing some palm muting or whatever, but sounds kinda like it. Was good technique and style.

i play the electric very much like an upright...not physically lol but i have the upright mindset that i tend to apply to bass guitar...i'll break out of it one day. oh and yes on some parts i was muting, to answer your question, but not consciencely, just played what felt right

I actually like listening to the tone, but i wouldn't play with it. Its real ballsy, which i like and it keeps the song grooving and rolling.

Tone: For what you're playing it fits and sounds great
Overall: Not my thing

Yeah, I would have to agree; a bit muddy. You need to cut through a bit more. That snare sounds great though!

considering how it was recorded. i say that's pretty sweet actually. the music and sound may not be some peoples taste...but who the **** cares. not everything applies to everybody, and i personally liked it.

Sounds great for a condenser mic but what does that mean? Really nothing. Agree with dampened high's and thumpier bass but that i would guess might have to do more with the mic/recording set up (something like amp being in the corner of the room could affect this or hard walls with a lot of reflection...)
Try recording direct with a mic'ed amp as a mix in to get a better idea *shrug*
Great for the cond mic though....

thanks, i attribute my warm sound to my RW fingerboard, it has nothing to do witht he condensor mics or the EQ, since fingerboards have a major impact on a bass' sound. that was a joke, but the way we have our stuff set up is that the bass amp is all they way in the corner but lined up with the bass drum.
