I accidentally cut a chuck out of my index finger!

Well I work in a Deli and i had to clean the slicers for cheeses. I clean the blade by letting it spin freely and spray on a degreaser. Well as he blade was still spinning I accidentally touched the blade.

It ripped off a chunk off the callouse (sp?) and some off my meat in my finger.

It will heal but that wont be for weeks.

Its not super serious but I am just a pissed off at myself and now I cant play bass.

I now have to use a pick which really sucks because I cant play standing up with a pick.

And what the worst part is that I finally installed my badass bridge, brass nut, hipshot tuners, rotosound SH77 and SPB3 pickups in my P bass! Now I cant imitate Steve in my room

The ironic thing is that we literally just had a training course on safety with the slicers earlier today .

Any tips on using a pick?

You just have to get used to using one, but if I were you I'd just try using my other 3 fingers.

as you should be

but seriously, I cant imagine how annoying that must be, all I can say is, try working on the other fingers, or even something else like theory or song-writing, maybe even singing??

what I'm trying to say is, you can still keep practicing music without playing the bass itself, which might make you happy!

OUCH! Watch for infection! I knew a guitarist who poked his finger with the end of a string and almost had to have his finger removed!
I also suggest making lemonade. Use this as an opportunity to develope your other fingers. When this one heals...wow!

I have a feeling it will heal in a few days but it wont be the same because I now have a crater in my finger!

But holy crap I HATE using a pick! I cant get anything down! Its like I am relearning bass.

as the other guys said practice with your other fingers, get em stronger and when you finger heals you can play with a whole heap of different rhythms using more that 2 fingers!

Learn to use alternate picking (up, down, up, down) if you haven't already. Don't do only down picking.

I'm sorry to hear that about your finger. My girlfriend plays guitar and cut the tip off her middle finger one night whilst cooking. It was sewn back on at the hospital (didn't quite go down to the bone) but even 12 months later she said it hurt a little to push down strings on her acoustic. I think it's mostly fine now though. Hopefully yours will heal quickish.

If you choose to continue to use a pick, try listening to some great pick players for inspiration. You've got the usual suspects like Chris Squire, John Entwistle, Greg Lake, etc... but also guys like Brian Ritchie (Violent Femmes), Steve Swallow (jazz player), and Bobby Vega (super funky). These guys will show you a pretty wide range of sonic pickstyle capabilities.
